This winter, Arctic sea ice likely reached its largest coverage of the year on March 22, a later-than-usual date. But even with the extra time to grow, it was still the smallest winter sea ice maximum ever recorded in the 47 years of satellite observations.
Scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center say this new record low is part of a clear trend: the Arctic is losing sea ice over time. All ten of the smallest winter ice coverages have happened since 2007. It’s one more sign of ongoing changes in the Arctic.

2025 Winter maximum sea ice extent in Arctic smallest on record
April 9, 2025
The National Snow and Ice Data Center reports that Arctic sea ice appears to have reached its seasonal maximum extent on March 22, 2025, 10 days later than the 1981-2010 average. Despite the late peak, it was the lowest maximum extent of the 47-year satellite era, which began in 1979.
